THINK ABOUT….. What does the tense mean???? What is the function of the tense???? What kinds of tense do you know???? Do you want to challenge practice questions????

DEFINITION OF TENSE According to the dictionary… Any one of the inflected forms in the conjugation of a verb that indicates the time, such as past, present, or future, as well as the continuance or completion of the action or state.

TENSE TIMELINES Past time Future intention --> Future simple --> Future perfect --> Future time

FUNCTION OF TENSE Through the use of sequence of tense in a sentence or in a paragraph  Indicate the complex temporal relationship of actions, events, and conditions. When you move or act something at the certain time, how can you explain it by words?

Tense-present Describe action, phenomenon, and condition about present. The present tense The present perfect The present continuous

The present tense Show about present customs and present repetition “I wake up 8:00 am every morning.”

The present perfect Show about completion, experiences, and continuations of actions based on present tense. “I have already finished my homework today.”

The present continuous Show situations and actions doing now “Now” is the important key word!! “I am playing piano now.”

We use the Simple Past when we talk about something which started and finished in the past. Simple Past Diagram We use the Simple Past to describe a series of actions in the past. Example: I visited Berlin last week. Form - with regular verbs: infinitive + -ed

We use the Past Perfect for an action which was completed before a special point of time in the past. Past Perfect - Diagram EX: Mary had read the book before she watched a film. Form had + past participle

We use the Past Progressive when we talk about something which was happening around a period of time in the past. Past Progressive – Diagram Use: Peter was reading a book yesterday evening. Past Progressive - Form to be (was, were) + infinitive + -ing

Past Perfect Progressive/Continuous Use How long something had been happening before something else happened Form had + been + infinitive + ing Example I had been waiting for Susan for 2 hours when she arrived.

Tense-future Simple future - shall, will, going to+V (use in centain things) Future continous/progressive -shall be, will be, going to be+Ving (use in certain thing) Future perfect (simple/progress) -will have, shall have+Vp.p

The academic writing in my discourse community Present simple (most in the body paragraph) Ex: Group counselors who work with MI clients should be grounded in the basic theories. Past simple (in introduction, background, or conclusion) Ex: The intent of this article was to introduce the reader to the MI group counseling issues. There’s rarely future tense using in my academic writing, however, it may use in a conclusion which indicated that some research points should be focus on in the future.

IN CONCLUSION..... we can explain someone acting or moving in different time by words. for the present, for the past, and for the future. In a sentence, we cannot deny that subject and verb should always exist. Without tense forms, we cannot say that it is language.
