1 Georgia Performance Standard
S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. C. Investigate and explain that electric currents and magnets can exert force on each other.

2 Magnetic Field Definition: Surrounds a magnet and exerts a force on other magnets Characteristic: A magnetic field is strongest close to the magnetic poles and weaker as you move further from the poles. Magnetic fields can be produced by moving electric charges.

3

4 How Can Current Make a Magnet: Electromagnet
Definition: Current-carrying wire wrapped around an iron core. Characteristic: The magnetic field of an electromagnet is turned on or off when the electric current is turned on or off. Example: An electric doorbell uses an electromagnet.

5 What are some examples of how electric currents and magnets exert a force on each other?
motor generator

6 Motor Definition: Any device that uses a magnetic field to turn electric energy into kinetic energy. Characteristic: To keep a motor running, the current-carrying wire is formed into a loop so the magnetic field can force the wire to spin continually.

9 Generator Definition: A device that uses a magnetic field to turn motion into electricity. Characteristic: A magnetic field exerts a force on the moving electrons that pushes them along the wire creating an electric current.
