8 Magistrate Monarchy Read pg. 494 in textbook Main officials of Roman Republic Represented tradition of Monarchy Top two magistrates were consuls elected to one-year-terms. They led the government and army. Acted as judges and high priests. Consuls could block each other’s decisions.

9 What is the Roman Senate? Read pgs. 494 – 495 in textbook Represented the tradition of oligarchy [political power held by a small few]. Advised Consuls and passed laws. Controlled the state finances ( the money )! Originally had 300 members from Patrician families, later included wealthy Plebeians..

10 The Assemblies Read pg. 495 in text book Made up of two groups: Centuriate and Tribal Assembly Represented the democratic element of the Roman Republic. Tribal Assembly was run by the Plebeians. Elected tribunes could Veto, or reject proposed actions of laws of other branches. Centuriate Assembly gave votes to members based on how military equipment they could provide.
