2 Agrarian South Facts:  Farm and ranch families comprise just 2% of the US population  The defining institutions of this agrarian tradition were the plantation and the small farm Importance:  Its important because it was a set of values and attitudes that had become common currency in the South by the 1700’s.

3 Industrial North Facts:  North differs from the South and the West by a comparative greater development of industry, which creates a market and makes for the intensification of agriculture.  Importance:  The North was different then the South and West. Plus it was big into the agricultural things.

4 Era of Good Feeling Facts:  The War of 1812 closed with the Federalist Party all but destroyed. Importance:  James Monroe, yet another Virginian, followed Madison in the Presidency for two terms from 1817 to 1825. Although this period has often been called the ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS due to its one-party dominance, in fact, Democratic- Republicans were deeply divided internally and a new political system was about to be created from the old Republican-Federalist competition that had been known as the FIRST PARTY SYSTEM.

5 Fugitive Slave Act Facts:  The Fugitive Slave Act was part of the group of laws referred to as the "Compromise of 1850.“  Favored by Millard Filmore Importance:  The fugitive Slave act authorized local governments to seize and return escaped slaves to their owners, and anyone who was caught disobeying the act would be penalized

6 Urbanization Facts:  Almost 180,000 people are added to the urban population each day.  Populations grew from 679 million to 1633 billion from 1700’s to 1900’s. Importance:  Urbanization was very important because America made up most of its population during the Industrial Revolution and when Urbanization occurred.

7 Manifest Destiny Facts:  During 1830’s and 1840’s American nationalism and Westward expansion had merged into widespread belief.  Originated in the 1840’s Importance:  It’s important because it’s the term for the attitude prevalent during the 19 th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could but was destined to stretch from coast to coast in the Manifest Destiny.

9 Monroe Doctrine Facts: The Doctrine stated that any type of intervention or presence of the European powers in the region was a direct threat to the safety of the American country Monroe Doctrine was passed by President James Monroe in 1823 as part of his annual speech to address the House of Representatives Importance: The Monroe Doctrine warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the western hemisphere.

10 Sectionalism Facts:  The North - primarily industrial in nature. Business and industry played major roles. While the North was not known for its agricultural production it was the largest producer of grain. Life was faster and commerce important.  The South - primarily agricultural. The southern economy was primarily based upon the existence of large family farms known as plantations. The plantation economy relied on cheap labor in the form of slaves to produce tobacco and then cotton. Importance:  Its important because

12 Indian Removal Act Facts:  1,000 miles. The Cherokee Trail of Tears was about 1,000 miles. The unhappy Cherokees were forced to follow the soldiers for a year to what is now the state of Oklahoma. Importance:
