2 The following formula is used to calculate volume: Square L x W x D = cu. (ft, yd, etc) cuft, cuyd cuft = 12” x 12” x 12” or ? Cuyd = 3’ x 3’ x 3’ or ? Circle π x r 2 x D = cu. (ft, yd, etc) cuft, cuyd 1728 cuin in a cuft 27 cuft in a cuyd

3 The following formula is used to calculate cubic feet: L” x W” x D” = cu. ft. Or L’ x W’ x D’ = cuft 1728 Example: 60’ x 3’ bed w/ 2” layer of mulch 60’ x 3’ x 2” = 12”

5 The following formula is used to calculate cubic feet for tree rings: V =  x r2 r2 x D Example: 3.14 x 8’ 2 circle w/ 2” layer of mulch 3.14’ x 64 sqft x 2” = 12”

7 Calculating the Amount of Mulch You Need Although lawns and garden beds are measured in feet, mulch is purchased in "yards" A "yard" of mulch is actually a cubic yard - one yard wide by one yard high by one yard deep

8 The following formula converts feet to cubic yard: L x W x D = cu. Yds 27 Example: 60’ x 3’ bed w/ 2” layer of mulch 60 x 3 x 2/12 = 27

9 180 x 1/6 = 27 60 x 3 x 2/12 = 27 30 = 1.1 cu. yds 27
