3 Convert units of measure between dimensions including area and volume.
Main Idea/Vocabulary

4 Convert Area Measurements
Convert one square foot to square inches. A square foot is a square with a side length of one foot. You know that one foot is equal to 12 inches. So, one square foot is a square with a side length of 12 inches. 1 ft. A = s 2 Write the formula. A = 122 Replace s with 12. A = 144 Simplify. Answer: So, one square foot is equal to 144 square inches. Example 1

5 Convert three square yards to square feet.
A. 1 ft2 B. 9 ft2 C. 27 ft2 D. 81 ft2 Example 1 CYP

6 Convert Area Measurements
Convert one square kilometer to square meters. A square kilometer is a square with a side length of one kilometer. You know that 1 kilometer is equal to 1,000 meters. So, one square kilometer is a square with side length 1,000 meters. A = s 2 Write the formula. A = 1,0002 Replace s with 1,000. A = 1,000,000 Simplify. Answer: So, one square meter is equal to 1,000,000 square meters. Example 2

7 Convert two square meters to square centimeters.
A. 20,000 cm2 B. 2,000 cm2 C. 200 cm2 D. 20 cm2 Example 2 CYP

8 Convert Volume Measurements
Convert one cubic yard to cubic feet. A cubic yard is a cube with a side length of one yard or 3 feet. V = bwh Write the formula. V = 3 • 3 • 3 Replace b, w, and h with 3. V = 27 Simplify. Answer: So, one cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet. Example 3

9 Convert two cubic feet to cubic inches.
A. 3,456 in3 B. 288 in3 C. 24 in3 D. 6 in3 Example 3 CYP

10 Key Concept 4

11 Divide out common units, leaving the desired unit, yards.
Convert Measurements GARDENS A rectangular garden is 12 feet by 15 feet. How many square yards is the garden? The area of the garden is 12 feet × 15 feet or 180 square feet. Use the reciprocal of the unit ratio to find the number of square yards. Multiply by Divide out common units, leaving the desired unit, yards. Example 4

12 Answer: The garden is 20 square yards.
Convert Measurements Divide. Answer: The garden is 20 square yards. Example 4

BEDROOMS Wendy’s bedroom is 10 feet by 14 feet. How many square yards is her bedroom? A. 900 yd2 B. 140 yd2 C. 47 yd2 D yd2 Example 4 CYP

14 Key Concept 5

15 Convert Volume to Capacity
Convert one cubic millimeter to milliliters. A cubic millimeter is a cube with a side length of one millimeter or 0.1 centimeter. Use 1 cc = 1 mL to convert the rates. V = bwh Write the formula. V = 0.1 • 0.1 • 0.1 Replace b, w, and h with 3. V = Simplify. Answer: So, one cubic millimeter is equal to milliliter. Example 5

16 Convert three cubic centimeters to milliliters.
A. 0.3 mL B. 3 mL C. 30 mL D. 300 mL Example 5 CYP
