The Earth and Moon System

The Effects of Gravity Gravity: a force of attraction between two objects, caused by those objects pulling on each other. The strength of this force depends on two things: 1.The distance between the two objects 2. The mass of each object, or how much matter each object contains. Mass: amount of matter that an object contains The closer the objects are to each other, the stronger the gravity is between them.

Earth’s Movement in Space The movement of the Earth in its orbit around the sun is the Earth’s revolution. A single revolution takes 365 Days. Seasons: when the Earth revolves around the Sun, the earth’s axis stays tilted at 23 ½. The tilt causes more sun light to fall directly on different parts of the Earth throughout its orbit.

The moons movement in space It takes the moon about 29 days to complete its revolution around earth. From earth we can only see one side of the moon. The other side never faces earth. The moon is the brightest object in the sky. It shines by reflecting light from the sun. Not all of the sunlit side can be seen from Earth, that is why we have phases of the moon.

Phases of the Moon Phases of the Moon are changes in the moon’s appearance as it orbits the earth. When moon is completely lit we have a full moon, when it is dark we have a new moon. See resource file 9.

MOON ECLIPSE: When the moon and sun line up exactly. Lunar: passing of the moon from the Earth’s shadow. Solar: passing of moon between the Earth and Sun.

Eclipse
