MY EXPERIENCES AT NITH AND NTHU Tanmay Agrawal NIT Hamirpur (2010-2014) Master Degree Student, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan

Hamirpur days Achieved a not so bad rank in AIEEE and got Mechanical engineering here at this campus. My first impression about the campus: It is beautiful, like the rest of Himachal. My first class at Hamipur was of Chemistry lab. Honestly, I did understand nothing.

First and second year Did “nothing” during the four vacations which I regret for, sometimes. The best time spent with room-mates. If you aim for higher studies or for internships, second year is the best year to get started. Start with easy projects. These form the base for better projects. And if you aim for job, join any industry for training. It is easier if you know the seniors.

Third year I was striving myself for internships. I got rejected a number of times and accepted with conditions. One fine morning, I got this mail from Taiwan about my selection. By the time I came back to India, I realized that it would be my last year of college which I was afraid of from the beginning.

Final year My final year was mostly involved with academic things. Presenting papers and reports, applying for higher studies etc. The best thing was: the hostel floor that I got. It had many of my good friends and will always remain as the most memorable time of my life.

My seniors told me in the beginning…. Pointer is not that important, it is contained in one line of your CV and the rest of the CV matters more. Every single line of your CV is important. Your academic record as well as your extracurricular. What I want to tell you is….

Some advices for all of you Keep a decent score for whatever you look for in future. Perhaps, more than 8 or 8.5 for higher studies, 7 for every campus job, 5 for if you just want to be called engineer. Have some hobbies, make yourself a star in that. This will keep you happy. Drink, but don’t create nuisance. This could help you in having best times with friends. In the end, all you would be having friends. Make them the best one for you. It is these people that makes your college life to remember.

A last note I have been a serious student all the four years. But now, I can not recall properly what my GPA was or what was title of my major project. I surely know these things were good enough in my case. It should be good in yours too. BUT.. I remember NIT Hamirpur more because of the friends and teachers I got to know while being here. I met excellent people in those four years.

Internship in Taiwan There are many reputed universities in Taiwan. NTHU(~50 * ) and NTU(~40 * ) are one of them. I was provided with sufficient financial support. So, that makes this smooth and easy. Research facilities in NTHU are excellent along with highly qualified faculty loaded with a lot of research fund. * QS World Ranking in Mechanical Engineering

Master degree program at PME Department of Power Mechanical Engineering is looking for Indian students. So, there is a good chance for selection. The application period is January to mid of march. So, you still can apply! Scholarship includes complete waiver of tuition fee and/or living stipend. This is the best part. Your study at a foreign university would be almost free of cost and in the end, you could be able to save some money.

Application Online application Transcripts Recommendation letters Study plan (SOP) Medical form English score (depends on the department) Bank statement

Few observable difference in NITH and NTHU Juniors and seniors are more frank with each other in Taiwan. This thing actually helps both of the individuals. Clubs and societies are open for those persons who are willing to learn. You do not need to be an expert already. Be it a big club like music or dance. On the other hand, NITians can speak better English. This fact sometimes makes me feel helpless in NTHU.
