Jamestown In April 1607, the first permanent English settlement is established in North America. Joint-Stock CompanyIt is financed by a Joint-Stock Company called the London Company. Location of the colony was chosen poorly. It was located near marshes. (Disease) and many of the colonists lacked the skills necessary for this environment.

John Smith 1608 The colony began to recover after John Smith took control. He forced settlers to adapt to their situation. He made them work harder and build better shelters. starving time John RolfeWinter of 1609, was the starving time. Jamestown was in trouble of failing again until an individual by the name of John Rolfe came to Jamestown.

John Rolfe John Rolfe TobaccoJohn Rolfe will make Jamestown profitable because he brings with him a new type of Tobacco. This cash crop would led to the colony’s success. PocahontasHe will later marry Pocahontas daughter of the Powhatan Indians. This will improve Native American relations for a period of time.

New England Colonies Pilgrims and Puritans PuritansPuritans: They were a Protestant group that wanted to purify (reform) the Anglican Church. PilgrimsPilgrims: They were a Separatist group that left England because of religious persecution.

The Mayflower Compact When the Pilgrims landed in present day Massachusetts, they established a set of laws. Mayflower Compact.Those laws were called the Mayflower Compact. This colony would be known as the Plymouth Colony.

Massachusetts Bay Colony This was a colony established by Puritans. John WinthropIt’s leader was John Winthrop. The Great Migration (1629-1640) thousand of men, woman and children leave England because of religious reasons and debt.

Rhode Island Roger WilliamsRoger Williams – He established the settlement of Providence, which would later become Rhode Island. Separation of Church and StateSeparation of Church and State – Government and the Church should separated from each other. Anne Hutchinson – One of the first woman to challenge church authority. She was put on trial for this and then asked to leave.

Middle Colonies Colony of Pennsylvania The Quakers equality of men and woman, nonviolence, opposed slavery and believed in religious tolerance.The Quakers (The Society of Friends) they believed in the equality of men and woman, nonviolence, opposed slavery and believed in religious tolerance. William PennWilliam Penn established a new Quaker colony that would later become Pennsylvania. He established an elected government (representative self-government) Penn would later name the capital of the colony Philadelphia.
