Chapter 24 Regulation / Rat Dissection

Why do you respond to changes around you? Your responses are controlled by your nervous and endocrine system. Together these 2 systems regulate or control, all of your body’s responses.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Neurons = nerve cells – They are the basic unit of structure and function in the PNS. – Their job is to carry messages.

Sensory Neurons carry messages from the ___________. 1.Brain to muscle 2.Sense organs to the spinal cord and brain 3.Brain to motor neurons 4.Brain to glands

What part of the brain allows a person to think and reason? 1.Medulla 2.Cerebellum 3.Cerebrum 4.Cell body

Reflexes are controlled by the _____. 1.Brain 2.Cerebrum 3.Medulla 4.Spinal cord

Dendrites carry messages _______. 1.To the cell body 2.Away from the cell body 3.Across synapses 4.Both to and from the cell body

What are impulses? 1.Electrical chemical energy 2.Nuclear energy 3.Mechanical energy 4.Magnetic energy

What is the basic unit of structure and function in the nervous system? 1.Brain 2.Spinal cord 3.Axon 4.Neuron

True or false The retina in our eyes contain both rods and cones.

Different kinds of neurons Sensory neurons: carry messages from the sense organs to the spinal cord and brain. Motor neurons: carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to muscles or glands. Associative neuron: connect sensory neurons and motor neurons.

Cerebrum This is the large upper portion of the brain It controls movement and speech Interprets information from the sense organs Cerebrum controls many functions associated with intelligence (thinking, reasoning, and memory)

Each half controls activities of the opposite side of the body.

Touch Your skin is the largest sense organ in your body. Skin can detect touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold. Touch receptors are found near the surface of the skin Pressure and pain receptors are found deep within the skin. Receptors on the skin are not evenly distributed over your body.

Taste & Smell The organs of taste and smell are stimulated by chemicals. Receptors for taste are located on taste buds found on your tongue. Taste buds can only detect 4 tastes: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.

Endocrine Glands Endocrine GlandHormoneFunction PituitaryGrowth hormone / other hormones Controls growth; regulates other glands ThyroidThyroxineRegulates growth and metabolism ParathyroidParathyroid hormoneRegulates calcium use AdrenalsCortisone Adrenaline Maintains salt/water balance Regulates body response to stress PancreasInsulinRegulates blood-sugar levels OvariesEstrogenFemale characteristics TestesTestosteroneMale characteristics
