1. Secret Book Written Activity Sample Section A (front cover) Boxes 1-3 Students select three powerful quotes from the story and write each on in the three boxes. Box 4 Students write the title of the story, author and their own name. They may include an appropriate image here. Section B (book open) Box 5 Students write a summary of the story in their own words. Boxes 6-11 Students write six questions about the story Box 12 Students write their interpretation of the story’s theme Section C (back cover) Box 13 Students write an “I know” poem about story Boxes 14-16 Students draw three important objects from the story Section D (from back cover, open secret compartment from right to left) Boxes 17-22 Students write their answers to the questions they asked in boxes 6-11. They should be prepared to justify and discuss everything they include in the secret book. Secret Book Oral Activity Sample (with finished book) 1.Arrange students in partners. Inner-outer circles or musical milling work well for this activity. 2.Teacher selects component of book as a discussion prompt (example: Share and discuss on quote). Allow about one minute. 3.Students change partners. 4.Teacher selects another prompt (example: Ask your partner one of your questions and discuss your answers). Again, allow about one minute. 5.Continue changing partners and providing new prompts based on content of the book until students have discussed several aspects. 6.You may want to do a whole class debrief after the activity: ask students to share interesting conversations they had, or invite them to share components of their books that they find particularly powerful.

How to make a Secret Book Materials: Two pieces of construction paper (2 different colors) Scissors Markers, gel pens, color pencils or crayons Directions: 1.Take one of the pieces of construction paper and fold it in half the short way. 2.Open it up again and fold each side to the middle. 3. Open paper again and refold along the original center fold. 4. Cut from the center fold to the quarter folds for as many sections as needed (greater than or equal to three sections). You may do more cuts than shown here, but there will be more sections to fill with content. 5. Fold the second piece of construction paper in the same manner as steps one and two. This piece will be cut differently. 6. Cut the piece into four strips along the folded lines. You will need 2. You can share or save the other two. 7. Open the first paper (that you cut in step 4. 8. With the book closed, and looking at the back cover, reach between the weaves (along the middle fold) from bottom to top to open the secret compartment from right to left. 10.
