1 CANADIAN CUSTOMS By: B. Hart

2 Statistics Population: 35.16 million Demographics (Majority/Minority Population): 72% of people currently in Canada identify as Native Canadian. Out of the other 28%: 16.6% African American, 23% South Asian, 25.8% Chinese, 2.5% Korean, 1.8% Japanese, 5.0% SE Asian, 7.7% Filipino, 7.6% Arabian, 5.4% Latin American, 2.5% Visible minority not included elsewhere, and 1.9% Multiple visible minority. Language: 31% of Canadians speak French fluently (most of which live in New Brunswick, Ontario, Toronto, or Ottawa), while 69% know little or no French.

3 Customs and beliefs The stereotypical idea that Canadians are all nice comes from the fact that strangers often talk to each other in Canada. It is not strange for someone you’ve never met to start a conversation with you. Taking off your shoes upon entering someone else’s home is important. The host will not be rude about it, but will often ask you to take off your shoes if you haven’t already. Giving cash as a gift is considered rude.

4 Business Etiquette Small talk is not a part of business in Canada. Businessmen are usually straightforward after the initial pleasantries. Usually relaxed and slightly informal, even if the matter for discussion is serious. Business decisions are based more on logic and rationale instead of emotions or feelings.
