 You will be aware of the key changes that have taken place in the British education system since the end of World War 2.  You will understand the form of the UK education system and recognise some of the factors that have shaped it.

 To work independently in class on an assessment exercise.  To meet assessment deadlines  To understand how you will be assessed in sociology public examinations

 Any answers that you write in an examination will be assessed using assessment objectives – this is a simple version of the document that the markers will be using to judge the answers that you write.

 Assessment objective 1 › Knowledge and understanding of sociology › Ability to explain this knowledge in clear English  Assessment objective 2 › Analysis and evaluation of your knowledge and understanding

 A/B grades › Candidates will display accurate and detailed knowledge › Candidates will select evidence to back up a point of view › They will be able to answer the question as it is asked in the examination  E/U grades › Some simple knowledge will be present › There will be a very basic attempt to answer the question

 To answer a question on this under examination conditions you will need to understand something about how the system of schools in Britain is organised and some of the reasons why it has developed in the way that it has.  Attempt the following question based on the notes that you have and your own further development and research. Try and spend 10 minutes on your answers. Outline and explain reasons for changes that have taken place in the education system. (10 marks)

 Suggest knowledge that you could display in your answer.  Suggest reasons for educational change Now discuss this with your study partners (3 minutes)

 Educational change may take place for the following reasons: › Ideology › Economics › Practical reasons › Political reasons  Think about how you could use those ideas in your short account.

You have ten minutes to attempt an answer to the question that you have planned. Starting now and counting!

Success in examination depends upon meeting criteria set by the examiner. Careful revision is essential to success Careful planning of answers gives you a chance to display your skills.

 You can research educational change by asking people who are much older than yourself about the types of school that they attended when they were younger. This is a qualitative method  What strengths and what weaknesses are there in relying of people’s memories of things that happened many years ago?
