 HW #3 due Wednesday.

 Do Now: Imagine that you are Louis XVI in 1789. Your country is bankrupt, and many people in the 3 rd estate are starving to death because they can’t afford bread. What would you do to try to improve the situation and pay off France’s debts: ◦ Continue taxing the 3 rd estate ◦ Start taxing the 1 st and 2 nd estates ◦ Borrow money from other powerful European countries (like Great Britain)

A. Since France was bankrupt, Louis XVI wanted to tax people who had money, the 2 nd Estate B. The nobles demanded that the French Parliament, the Estates – General be called to approve the tax hike; it had not met 175 years.

C. However, the 3 rd Estate demanded that the voting procedure of the Estates-General be changed; traditionally, each estate was given 1 vote. Why would this be a problem? 1st Estate2 nd Estate3 rd Estate

D. Since the 3 rd Estate had more delegates who represented a larger part of the population, they wanted a vote by head. E. When the Estates-General met in May, 1789, the voting issue had still not been settled. F. So, the 3 rd Estate took action ⇨ They created a brand new body called the National Assembly who would truly represent the people of France.

A. The National Assembly proclaimed the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of representative government. B. Locked out of their meeting hall, the members of this new body met at a nearby indoor tennis court ⇨ They vowed to continue meeting until a new constitution was written; this was called the Tennis Court Oath. C. Many members of the 1 st and 2 nd Estates joined the National Assembly

1.Describe the three figures in this cartoon. 2.Describe the action taking place in this cartoon. 1.Explain the message of this cartoon. 1.How is the portrayal of the 3 rd Estate different in this cartoon than it was in the cartoon we examined last week?

A. In a panic, the King hired Swiss soldiers and stationed them in Paris. B. Reaction from the people?

C. To protect themselves, Parisians stormed a local prison, the Bastille, where gunpowder and weapons were stored. D. The storming of the Bastille was a symbolic act of revolution by the people ⇨ Every year the French commemorate this event by celebrating Bastille Day on July 14.

 Was the French Revolution inevitable? Is there anything Louis XVI and his government could have done differently to prevent this revolution from happening?
