G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Co-ordinate System CAD 1.2 x,y x1,y1 All lines in drawing as x,y co-ordinates in a digital database x x1 y y1 ORIGIN

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Basic drawing elements CAD 1.3 U ser C o-ordinate S ystem Lines Polylines Circles,Rectangles etc Entities Blocks Each element represented by x and y co-ordinates

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files CAD screen showing portion of MODEL CAD 1.4 CAD Screen shows a zoomed in portion of the whole CAD model/drawing No scale Virtual model on infinite plane

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files MODEL Tab CAD 2.1 Active drawing/model which can be edited and amended Usually (but not always) with a BLACK background No scale used = Full size model MODEL tab Usually (but not always) WITHOUT borders and Title blocks

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files LAYOUT Tabs CAD 2. 2 Paper representation which defines paper size and scale Usually (but not always) with a WHITE background Usually (but not always) WITH borders and titleblocks LAYOUT tab Alternative LAYOUT tab Represents a different view of the same MODEL (possibly at different scale with different layers)

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Layers CAD 2.3 Each LAYER has: Name (arranged alphabetically) On/Off Freeze/Thaw Lock/Unlock Colour Linetype Lineweight Plotstyle Plot (Y/N) Select Create NEW layer or DELETE existing layer or Select CURRENT layer Off Frozen Locked Not to Plot

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Zoom and Pan CAD 2.4 ZOOM Functions: Zoom window Previous zoom Zoom to extents Pan Zoom in and pan to see greater detail on the model

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Plot Device Window CAD 3.1 Title blocks should be on LAYOUT tab – plot as designer intended Select “File” and then “Plot” to go to PLOT WINDOW Select 1. Printer Name 2. Plot style (Mono if black and white) 3. Number of copies required 1 1 2 2 3 3

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Plot Settings Window CAD 3.2 Title blocks should be on LAYOUT tab – plot as designer intended Select “Plot Settings” TAB Select4. Paper Size (A0-A4) and Orientation 5. Plot Area (Layout) 6. Plot Scale (Should plot correctly if paper size correct) 7. Full Preview to check output 4 4 5 5 6 6 7 7 4 4

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Plotting preset layouts CAD 3.3 Print Preview of plot showing correctly positioned border filling selected paper size If border not shown or information is missing then incorrect paper size selected Press Right Mouse Key then Exit to return to Plot Window Change Paper size to suit Otherwise press PLOT to plot!

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Plot Settings for printing to scaleon smaller paper formats CAD 3.4 In order to print to scale on smaller paper size select MODEL 4. Paper size and orientation (as before) 5. Plot Area - Extents for all of the model Display for what you can see View for predetermined Viewport or Window for selected portion Note that “Scaled to Fit” (6) will change value for each selection Select next appropriate ISO scale (say 1:200) and preview (7) 4 4 5 5 4 4 6 6 7 7

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Print Preview to check acceptable plot CAD 3.5 Adjust scale (or Scale to fit to fill the sheet) Centre the plot if required under “Plot Offset” below scale information

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Potting largescale portions of model CAD 3.6 Portions of the drawing can be Plotted to larger scale Select “Window” and select appropriate area and Preview

G&T Basic CAD Concepts and Printing from CAD Files Previous Plot parameters CAD 3.7 If you have many similar plots to do from a series of files Use “Previous Plot” from the drop Down Menu Note that “Scaled to Fit” (6) will change value for each selection Select next appropriate ISO scale (say 1:200) and preview (7) 7 7
