Light Energy: The Electromagnetic Spectrum

A. Electromagnetic Spectrum

Light travels in the form of electromagnetic waves – some can be seen, most can’tLight travels in the form of electromagnetic waves – some can be seen, most can’t

Wavelength The distance of one cycle of a wave.

Frequency The number of waves that go by a point in one second.

Speed of Light 300,000 km/sec So, no matter the type of light, they will all get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ at the same time! AB

Visible Light R O Y G B I V Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet Long Wavelength Short Wavelength Low Frequency High Frequency Low Energy High Energy

Light can be Absorbed & Reflected A substance appears the color it is because that color of light is reflected off of it. –A green leaf appears green because the energy from green light is reflecting off the Chlorophyll in the leaf while the energy from the other colors is being absorbed. Photosynthesis – The process of a plant taking in carbon dioxide, water, and absorbing light energy to create food (C 6 H 12 O) & give off oxygen CO 2 H 2 O O2O2 C 6 H 12 O 6

Light can be Refracted & Diffused Light bends (refracts) when it travels through different transparent (see- through) and translucent (partially see-through) materials – b/c it changes SPEED! Light scatters (diffuses) when it reflects off uneven surfaces.

Mixing Colors of Visible Light The primary colors of light are Blue, Green, & Red Green Red Blue Cyan MagentaYellow White
