3 3 branches of government : LEGISLATIVE EXECUTIVE JUDICIAL

4 LEGISLATIVE BRANCH makes laws for the nation The main lawmaking body is Congress 2 parts - the House of Representatives and the Senate- bicameral system Congress meets on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C

5 The Senate The upper house of the Congress There are 100 senators Each state has two senators. A Senator is in office for 6-year terms senators meet in the U.S. Capitol building

6 The house of representatives 435 elected members, divided among the 50 states in proportion to their total population. The presiding officer of the chamber is the Speaker of the House, elected by the Representatives Members of the House are elected every two years and must be 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and a resident of the state. Representatives serve for a term of two years They can be elected for more than one term.

8 EXECUTIVE BRANCH The President of the United States The Vice President responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress The Cabinet meeting of the heads of departments of state The Executive Branch employs more than 4 million Americans(including armed forces)

9 The Cabinet – some departments: State Department: Its head is the Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton in 2009).It is responsible for the international relations of the US. (like the foreign ministry in most other countries) Department of Agriculture: helps farmers get fair prices for their crops and helps them to sell their crops to other countries. It inspects food products to make sure that they are good quality. Department of Commerce: does research in engineering, science, and other technology. The department also helps small businesses to grow. Department of Defense: responsible for providing military forces needed to protect the United States. It also advises the president on matters involving national defence.

11 The Judicial branch The Supreme Court is the highest court in the U. S. - consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and eight Associate Justices, nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The nine justices can serve for as long as they live, or wish to retire Federal courts the Supreme Court building - Washington,D.C.
