2 U.S. educational system Compulsory education in all the states begins at the age of 6, in some states attendance is required to the age of 16, 17, or 18. Elementary and secondary education in the U.S. is comprehensive. System of U.S. education can be divided into the following stages: 1) Elementary education through Elementary School (1st to 6th grade, age 6 to 12) 2) Secondary education through High School divided into: Junior High School (7th to 9th grade, age 12 to 15) Senior High School (10th to 12th grade, age 15 to 18) 3) Higher education - college or university, which canbe followed by graduate and professional schools

3 US – Types of Schools, years etc. Public schools – run by the governments Private schools – state-certified Home school program The year groups are called GRADES Elementary education includes the subjects: arithmetic mathematics English ( grammar, spelling, literature) history geography

4 Harvard University A private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts Established in 1636 The university currently comprises ten separate academic units Radcliffe College, established in 1879 as sister school of Harvard College, became one of the most prominent schools for women in the United States. In 1999, Radcliffe College merged formally with Harvard University

5 UK educational system educational syllabus given by National Curriculum schooling compulsory from the age of 5 – 16 1) Primary school a) infant school (from 5-6) b) junior school (from7-11) 2) Secondary school (from 12-16) GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) A-level : for assessing the suitability of applicants for academic courses in UK Universities after 16 – apprenticeships (trades) vocational courses (mechanics, painting, decorating) 3) Higher education Universities, teacher training and non-university education

6 UK educational system – interesting facts: In the academic year 2009/2010 undergraduates pay tuition fees set at a maximum £3225 per annum. Public schools = Independent schools - are free to select their pupils, subject only to the general legislation against discrimination. Only a small minority of parents can afford school fees averaging over £23,000 per annum for boarding pupils and £11,000 for day pupils

7 Oxford, Cambridge Cambridge is best known as the home of the University of Cambridge Cambridge is also known for its university sporting events against Oxford Most notable of the bands that formed in Cambridge are Pink Floyd Cambridge Beer Festival started in 1974, is the second largest outside London The University of Oxford does not have a clear date of foundation. Teaching at Oxford existed in some form in 1096. There are 38 colleges of the University of Oxford

8 Primary/Elementary Education Compare both countries: When do pupils start attending basic level of education? How long does it last? What are the special terms expressing forms of basic education?

9 Secondary education What age does the transfer to secondary education take place? How long does it last? What sort of education can students obtain at vocational schools or apprenticeships? What age can the students in both countries leave the school at? Why? How long do they need to prolong attending secondary school if they want to enter university? What kinds of assessments or examination do you know? What is GCSE or A-Level? How do they differ from each other?

10 Consider: Do you thing that all forms of education should be free of charge? Why? Give some pros‘ and cons‘. Are there any advantages given at private school? What do you think about boarding schools? Which universities do you think are best in the Czech Republic and why? What are the most popular faculties / subjects students chose to study nowadays? Is education important and why?
