Surviving & Thriving Your Freshman Year & Beyond MidWeek 10 Seminar Series First Year Success

Starting Out Right Whether you are just starting your academic journey or you are returning after an absence; being on a college campus can be intimidating! There are a few easy steps you can take to increase your success at MSU Denver: Take a campus tour! Choose two campus services you feel are essential to your success and visit both of them during the first few weeks of the semester. For example if Math is intimidating, then check out the free Tutoring Center. It is good to know where resources are before you need them!

Get to know what MSU Denver can offer you! For example did you now that some student services stay open later during the first week of classes? …or that if you want to take advantage of the services the Counseling Center offers that you do not need to schedule your first visit? …or that the Health Center offers FREE classes for students through their Healthy Moves program? There are an abundance of student support services on campus that are staffed with knowledgeable people. These trained professionals want to help you be successful so reach out to the Library, Career Center, Access Center, Academic Advising, Auraria Health Center and more!

You Are NOT Alone. The truth is that ALL students even the most successful and organized can feel overwhelmed and isolated.

There are a few things you can do now to counteract feeling overwhelmed in the future: Take advantage of student support services on campus! With few exceptions all kinds of support is available to you on campus at no charge. Talk to other students! Connecting with other students is important because they provide support, encouragement, and information about programs and services!

Attend social and cultural events on campus. There are a wide variety of events to choose from: check out a basketball game, a book reading, or show your skills during Open Mic, there is always something to do on campus. Get involved in the community! Volunteering can be another way to connect with your peers who share your interests and values. FYS has a few volunteering opportunities, check out our webpage for specifics! Stay physically active. Check out the Campus Recreation webpage for ideas on stress busting workout opportunities!
