2 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Give the reader enough background into your subject so that the reader has some idea of what you will be talking about. (OVERVIEW) On the other hand, don't give so much background that you bog the reader down with too much information. Make it interesting so that the reader will want to continue to read your paper.

3 Research Paper When you reference the five strands, they are the five strands of social studies. They are not the five strands of the United States!

4 Student example #1 In this paper, I am going to talk about the United States. or In this paper, I am going to tell you about the United States.

5 Student example #2 One of them is the Grand Canyon. Another cool attraction is Walt Disney World. Some more information you will be learning about is the geography, history, government, economy, and culture.

6 Student example #3 The United States is a country located north of Canada. It is a country with many exciting places to visit. But, do you know anything about the five strands of social studies for the United States?

7 Student Example #4 Have you ever heard of the United States? Well, if you haven’t it is a country on the North American continent. That’s only one fact out of many that I’m going to tell you about. If you want to learn more about the five strands of social studies for the United States, keep reading.

8 Assignment: On a blank piece of paper, write your introductory paragraph. Remember to: Indent the first line (keep the left edge in line as you go down the paper) Skip a line between lines on your rough draft. Tell the reader what you will be talking about. Make it interesting.

10 Do Now 1/27/15 Have your USA Research graphic organizer out and ready to be checked. Have your introduction ready to be checked With the student sitting next to you, review the important elements of an introductory paragraph. Be Ready to work on your introduction paragraph.

11 With a person close to you, read their introductory paragraph. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH CHECKLIST Does your introductory paragraph give an overview of what the paper will be about? Does it grab the readers attention? In other terms: IS IT BORING? IF SO CHANGE IT!!!! Did you indent the paragraph? Write your feedback on their paper.
