Conferencing Users (Present) Shift from integrated room to high-end pre-engineered environments. Out of the Box Conferencing Systems PC/Web Conferencing

High-end pre-engineered environments are considered “Telepresence”.

What the heck is Telepresence? Original definition. Expanded the definition in the mid-90s. Conference vender definitions are self serving. Fundamentally, it is an attempt to reposition video conferencing because of its previous flaws, failures and disappointments.

Conferencing Users (Present) AV Integrated Room Out of the Box Conferencing Systems PC/Web Conferencing This is Telepresence

Generic Telepresence Definition Better Audio Better Video Better Connectivity Better Human Factors

Is Telepresence for the high-end room? Out of the Box Conferencing Systems PC/Web Conferencing Telepresence It only increases the productivity of a few.

The Promise of Telecommuting Technology is enabling workers to stay at home. More flexible working hours, eliminate commuting time. Increase leisure or work time. Reduce car emission pollution. Vital to the future of human society.

The Growth in Telecommuting 82.5 million employees worked at least one day a month at home in 2006, double from 2000 - Gartner, Inc. Research. 100 million employees will achieve this by 2008. 87% of executives polled stated that telecommuting will increase in the coming decade - Robert Half International. 250 hours or 6 weeks of additional work time are added a year to teleworkers who work at least one more hour per day.

The Limited Vision of Telecommuting “Most people enjoy the social interaction they experience in centralized offices. And, of course, things like creating trust between team members can be done best only in face-to- face situations. So there’s little danger of office buildings lying neglected and entirely empty any time soon.” – American Telecommuting Association.

Personal Video Conferencing Frustrations Try to turn the computer interface into a relational experience. Bandwidth availability. Costs. Lack of vision.

Personal Telepresence Fundamentally improve your experience at work and in your home office. Just like sitting at the other side of the table, literally. Correct human factors: Distance, eye contact and life size. Improved audio. HD for viewing images closer up.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Life-size Life-size image, but how many people? Space limitations in offices will not permit 8 foot wide screens. A practical conclusion is a screen around 45 - 55 inches to display a life- size person.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Distance The display is in the conversational space. Not hanging on the wall on the other side of the room. Simulate someone sitting on the other side of your desk.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Eye Contact Someway of aligning the camera to appear as if it is behind the eyes of the person of the screen. Eye contact is eye contact.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Image Stereo 3D, is it the future? Complexity. Fresh out of the University:

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Augmented Reality Video object or person overlaid in the physical room environment. Impressive 2D effect. Requires environmental changes, chromakey or black background.

Augmented Reality Continued The technological art origin is rooted in the classic “Peppers Ghost Illusion”, in which DVE owns the largest patent claim base in the world. DVE’s co-founders, Machtig and McNelley, have installed world class visual effects in entertainment complexes, theme parks and trade shows around the globe for more than 15 years. DVE knows the difference between gimmicks and true telepresence.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Real Environment Image What is seen on screen is the person in their environment. That environment often is a reflection of the person and adds context to their personality.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: Virtual Background Gimmicks Chromakey can place a person into any background. It’s fun but irrelevant to natural conversational communication. Apple iChat will have a differentiated key.

Exploring Personal Telepresence: ALIEN Backgrounds An ALIEN background has nothing to do with the persons environment or being in the other person’s environment. It is alien to the normal conversational experience. The clear transparent displays used for augmented reality can be placed in front of sets and backdrops to create eye catching and curious video effects. A non-reflective backdrop consisting of a $200 light box and a graphic can achieve these effects.
