Louisiana Purchase- 1803 Bought from France Doubled the size of the nation Jefferson doubted the Constitution gave him the power to make the purchase.

War of 1812 US was angry over impressment. British were supplying weapons to Native Americans to fight American settlers. War Hawks demanded war. American military was small and underfunded but the British were occupied with France in Europe. British burnt Washington D.C. Andrew Jackson was very successful in New Orleans. US wins the war.

Consequences of the war. 1. End of the Federalist Party 2. Growth of American industry. 3. Confirms the US is free and independent. War ends with the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. Fun Fact: Named by George Washington in 1797, USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat.In the War of 1812, during the battle with the British ship,Guerriere she became known as " Old Ironsides " because the walnut sides of the ship were so dense that cannon balls bounced off them,.

James Monroe Elected in 1816 Secretary of State was John Quincy Adams Adams was focused on establishing and expanding the borders of the United States. 1818 US border with Canada established at 49 th parallel Joint occupation of Oregon territory. Adams-Onis Treaty 1819- Established border with Mexico and acquired Florida.

Monroe Doctrine Fear of European colonization prompted Monroe to address foreign policy. Declared that the Western Hemisphere is no longer available for European colonization. Any country attempting to colonize will be considered a threat to the safety of the United States.
