To IDENTIFY whether a child has special needs that may require professional attention To REFER to appropriate professionals, services and educational resources DESC2

3 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System The Tool Includes Two Types of Questionnaires 11 Age-Specific Questionnaires Concerning Child Development A Questionnaire About Those Early Life Experiences or Risk Factors That Predispose Children to Having Disabilities or Other Special Needs. DESC3

4 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System The 11 Age-Specific Questionnaires Birth through 3 months old 4 through 5 months old 6 through 8 months old 9 through 11 months old 12 through 14 months old 15 through 17 months old 18 through 23 months old 2 years through 2 years, 5 months 2 years, 6 months through 2 years, 11 months 3 years old 4 years old DESC4

5 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System If The Child Was Premature The Discovery Tool Adjusts for Prematurity Definition: A baby born before 37 weeks gestation (the time from conception to birth) is considered premature; when born before 32 weeks, a child is considered significantly premature. Adjustment for Prematurity is made automatically online by the Discovery Tool. DESC5

9 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System Functional Skills Basic Functional Skills Which Scientific and Clinical Research Indicates the Average Child of a Certain Age Will Develop and Demonstrate Examples: For a 4 to 5 month old child Body Movement - Physical Development and Motor Skills, such as: “Does baby push ups” or “Brings hands and toys to his or her mouth” DESC9

10 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System Potential Problem Behaviors Behaviors That May Interfere with a Child’s Ability to Learn and to Get Along with Others When They Occur or Do Not Occur During Certain Age Periods Examples: For a Child in the 2 year, 6 month through 2 year, 11 month age period Language Behaviors such as “Staring into space or talking to self a lot” Or “Not speaking at all” DESC10

12 The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System SCORING SYSTEM CHILD MAY HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS IF USER INDICATES An Absence of Four or More Functional Skills From All Areas of Development, or An Absence of Two or More Functional Skills from One Area of Development, or The Presence of Three or More Potential Problems From All Areas of Development, or The Presence of Two or More Risk Factors Conditions DESC12
