CM220 College Composition II Saturday, June 04, 2016 1 Unit 8: Reflection & Revision Welcome to College Composition I! Unit 6 Seminar Melissa (Missy) Carr

seminar agenda In this seminar, we will discuss how to:  Discuss online research  Conduct a scavenger hunt using the Kaplan online library

research Organizing your research is essential! Use a method of organization that works well for you. You can:  Print hard copies of your sources.  Create a folder on your computer for all the files you save (you can save e-books from the library by clicking on the “Add to Favorites” link.  You can also create a Word document that contains the pieces of text you find valuable from each source—don’t forget to include the full citation and page numbers if needed.

research The Index Card Trick: On each card, write down notes from each source as well as the full citation and page numbers. You can color code the cards (all blue cards are from source 1, all green from source 2, and so on). You can easily group the cards by similar ideas or supporting evidence. You can move them around and change their order until you feel they follow a logical arrangement. You can also jot down your own ideas on the cards and fit them into the puzzle as well. From there, it is very easy to transfer the order of your cards into an outline.

The Unit 9 Final Project At this point in your writing journey, you have learned about yourself as a writer by experiencing challenges, recognizing strengths and talents, and emerging with a sense of identity as a writer. Through this journey, you have also built credibility as someone who understands what it means to experience a life-changing journey by taking advantage of the help available to you and proceeding with determination and courage. These experiences will help you establish a voice as a life coach for an individual who needs help.

Unit 9 Final Project, cont. You have been hired by a life coaching business to help a person in trouble begin a hero’s journey that will get him or her back on a purposeful path in life. You may choose any one person to help. This person will be your client. To get the job you want, you’ll need to submit the following for the company’s review.

Unit 9 Final Project, cont.  Introduce yourself to your client: you will need to identify a person who needs help—this can be someone from history, fiction (books, television, movies), a celebrity, or someone from your life. Write an introduction to clarify who he or she is and why this person needs to embark on a helpful journey. (Unit 8 Scenario/Discussion)  Define the threshold he or she needs to cross. Explain its significance. (Unit 3 Exercise)  Create an extended definition of the way the hero’s journey steps in this course can help this person. (Unit 4 Discussion)  Indicate the short and long-term benefits of this journey (Unit 6 Exercise)  Provide a conclusion that recaps your plan and leaves a positive impression on your potential employer (Unit 8 Scenario and Seminar)

Accessing the Kaplan Library On your Kaplan home page, after you’ve logged in, click on the Library link under the Quick Links heading, which will take you to the library’s home page. Then, click on the Find Articles & E-books tab/link near the top of the page, which will take you to a page where you can click on a variety of databases. You’ll likely want to use the Academic Search Premier database for most of your research.

Kaplan Library Scavenger Hunt 1.Find an article regarding the general topic of social problems. Make note of the steps involved in finding the article—which database you used, the search terms you used, etc. Also, make note of the article’s title, author’s name, and subject. 2.Find an article regarding the general topic of homelessness. Make note of the steps involved in finding the article—which database you used, the search terms you used, etc. Also, make note of the article’s title, author’s name, and subject. 3.Write a short paragraph in which you describe how easy or difficult it was for you to use the databases and/or library and why. Be prepared to share!
