3. 3 Inception of Programs Public concerns about algae blooms in Geist Reservoir in 2007 Dr. Tedesco/CEES work in reservoirs Senator Gard’s call for coordinated approach to examining this issue

4. 4 What We Have Learned Traditional assumptions of when algae blooms occur have been challenged. Nutrient loadings from a variety of sources, including residential, agricultural, point sources contribute to the problem. Existence of cell counts does not necessarily imply high toxin levels. High toxin levels can occur with low cell counts.

5. 5 Statewide Coordination IDEM has partnered with DNR, ISDH, Indianapolis/Veolia Water, and IUPUI’s Center for the Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES) to monitor local reservoirs. IDEM/ISDH partner on Blue Green Algae level advisories to provide public with information.
