What can this program do? An Excel program mainly for pop music composition Chord Input Chord Identification Automatic Modulation Harmonic Analysis Template for Score Preparation Lyric Input Library of Common Musical Signs and Symbols

What does this program consist of ? Six Worksheets Input Template – Define keys; enter chords, lyric, song title, time signature, tempo, style, authors’ names, etc. Output Template 1 - Present the score in simplified form Output Template 2 – Present the score in staff form Symbol – Store the common musical signs and symbols Chord Identification – Identify the chord notes of any chord you specified Tool – Formulation tools (hidden)

To start it Go to Input Template On top of the sheet, enter time signature, tempo, title, page no., keys (max. 3 keys) and ……. also style and authors.

To define keys Use 1 to denote the 1st key; 2, the 2nd key; and 3, the 3rd key. Keys are input in the yellow tiny box in each bar. Key can’t be changed within a bar. For example: 1 for Key C --> Bars 1 to 4 ……………… 2 for Key F # --> Bars 17 to 20 ……………. 2 for F # --> Bar 45, 3 for D b --> Bars 46 and 47, and 1 for C --> Bar 48

What keys are available ? 26 keys Avoid using keys not in the table For example, use D b not C # Error would occur if keys not in the table were used AAmAm A b A b m BBmBm B b B b m CCmCm DDmDm D b D b m EEmEm E b E b m FFmFm F # F # m GGmGm G b G b m

To input chords Chords are input in each bar, in the circled area below, based on the CHORD INPUT CODES ( 和弦輸入法 ) designed by the author. Max 4 chords are allowed in each bar. 3 cells are reserved for each chord designation as follows: Click to know the codes

What if you want to change the key(s) afterwards? Free to change the 3 keys in Input Template anytime after you’ve entered all the chords. The chords will be corrected automatically to the chords of the new key(s).

To input lyric Write the lyric at the bottom in the green area of each bar. The lyric will be shown in the 2 output templates.

To see the score in simplified form Go to Output Template 1.

To see the score in staff form Go to Output Template 2.

To input musical notes and notation Notes and notation can be typed or hand written in the simplified score (Output Template 1) or the staff (Output Template 2). Common musical signs and symbols are available for copy and paste from the “Symbol” worksheet.

Harmonic Analysis (Optional) No Parallel 5 th No two parts should move in parallel 5th in consecutive chords No Parallel 8 th No two parts should move in parallel octaves in consecutive chords The movement of one chord to another is called progression. When dealing with chord progression conventionally, there are certain rules of harmony have to be obeyed. The main rules concerned in this program are:

Harmonic Analysis (Optional) No Exposed 5 th Soprano and Bass should not move in similar motion to a perfect 5 th except that Soprano moves by step. No Exposed 8 ave Soprano and Bass should not move in similar motion to an octave except that Soprano moves by step.

To carry out harmonic analysis (optional) Back to Input Template. According to the given chords, input the notes (1, 1+, 2-, 2, 2+, 3-, 3, 4, 4+, 5-, 5, 5+, 6-, 6, 6+, 7- and 7 for C, C #, D b, D, D #, E b, E, F, F #, G b, G, G #, A b, A, A #, B b and B respectively) for soprano, alto, tenor and bass in the corresponding cells in each bar.

To carry out harmonic analysis (optional) “OK” will be shown in the table (below the input table) if parallel 5 th /8 th and exposed 5 th /8 ave cannot be detected by the program.

To carry out harmonic analysis (optional) If detected, the followings will appear in the corresponding cells as shown in the example. //5 th  Parallel 5 th //8 th  Parallel 8 th Exp. 5/8  Exposed 5 th or 8 ave

To identify a chord Press the button at the upper left corner of the “Input Template” worksheet to go to ………… the “Chord Identification “ worksheet as follow:

Then, 1. Choose one of the 3 keys defined previously. 2. Specify the chord you want to know about. 3. Enter the chord subscript as defined in the left table. Leave it blank for major chords. 4. The chord notes of the chord you specified are identified in this bar.
