Overview Disclaimer Rhyme Meter

Disclaimer This lecture focuses on how some poems are organized. Not all poetry rhymes, and not all rhyming poetry follows a specific meter. Keep in mind, poetry is an art, and there are no “rules” only guidelines.

Rhyme Scheme Definition: The pattern of rhymes in a poem. A rhyme scheme has two main components: – Rhyme – Meter

Labeling Rhymes When we label rhymes, we show which rhymed lines match by using letter labels.

Check for Understanding Fire and Ice Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favour fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. - Robert Frost

Check for Understanding A Time to Talk When a friend calls to me from the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don't stand still and look around On all the hills I haven't hoed, And shout from where I am, 'What is it?' No, not as there is a time talk. I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground, Blade-end up and five feet tall, And plod: I go up to the stone wall For a friendly visit. - Robert Frost

Meter We will talk about meter tomorrow.

Review Label rhymed lines by giving them all matching letters The pattern of rhymes can be very simple or very complex according to the author’s preferences.
