Wednesday 3/6

Agenda 3/6 Plant Station Lab You will need your computer or paper

Objective 3/6 Objective: Examine specialized cells, including roots, stems, and leaves of plants (5B) Students will examine specialized cells within roots, stems and leaves using equipment such as microscopes/microslides / or observations of organism or images. Student should be able to describe the importance of these specialized cells to the plant.

Plant Structure and Function Sketch or write about information in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVfV5LMX h2s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVfV5LMX h2s

Station 1: Cells of a Leaf Draw/Sketch a picture of a leaf cell: What are the parts or features of the plant leaf in photosynthesis? What is the importance of stomata?

Station 2:Cells of the Stem Draw/Sketch a picture of the cells of a stem: What is the importance of the meristematic tissue? Predict what would happen to the plant if the meristematic tissue was damaged.

Station 3: Cells of the Root Draw/Sketch a picture of a root cell: What is the function of xylem and phloem in a plant? Give an analogy of something that has a similar function to xylem and phloem:

Station 4: Cells of a Flower Draw/Sketch a picture of a flower including its reproductive parts: Angiosperms evolved after gymnosperms. Why might angiosperms be better at reproducing and therefore dominating the planet?

Bonus Stations 5-8 List the 4 classes of plants 1. 2. 3. 4. Give a brief description of the 4 classes of plants 1. 2. 3. 4.

Conclusion Questions What could be done to maximize photosynthesis? What would happen if all the leaves on the plant fell off? Can you predict the outcome if the xylem or phloem got blocked?

Extend your thinking… Can you construct a model that would change the way plants receive nutrients if sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide wasn’t readily available?
