2 History of Greek Drama Between 600 and 200 BC, the Athenians created plays that are still considered among the greatest works of drama. The theater of Ancient Greece evolved from religious rites worshiping Dionysus, the god of fertility and procreation. Festivals became competitions; prizes were awarded

3 Purpose of Greek Tragedy Makes the audience feel pity and fear – pity for the tragic hero/protagonist and, – fear for all human beings who are subject to an unknown fate.

4 Characteristics of Tragedy Revolves around a Tragic Hero: – A person of importance (usually a king or prince) – A person of extraordinary abilities but has a flaw, usually excessive pride (hubris) – Experiences a downfall, usually through some combination of hubris, fate, and the will of the gods

5 Characteristics of Tragedy Includes a chorus: – offered background and summary information to help the audience follow the performance; – comments on themes; – represents the general population of the particular story; – the chorus leader would at times speak to the actors, always representing the common people.
