  Strip Mining  Open Pit Mining  Underground Mining Three Types

  Used to get minerals like coal and oil sands that are located near the surface. 1.Overburden (trees, rock, soil) is removed. 2.Blasting (blowing stuff up with dynamite) may be needed 3.Minerals taken away by truck Strip Mining

 Pro’sCon’s Cheapest Safest High production Involves clear cutting Disrupts animal habitats Vibrations affect land Pro’s and Con’s

 Strip Mining

  Used to get stuff that’s still close to the surface, but may reach deeper into Earth 1.Overburden removed 2.Holes are drilled 10-15 meters deep and filled with explosives. Rocks blown up. 3.Ore loaded into huge trucks and processed. Open Pit Mining

 Pro’sCon’s Somewhat Cheap Safe Very common with oil Involves clear cutting Disrupts animal habitats Involves cleaning and repairing the area Pro’s and Con’s

 Open Pit Mining

  Used to find ores deep inside the Earth. 1.Miners take an elevator down to the working area. 2.Holes are drilled in the rock, filled with explosives 3.Rock is blasted apart. 4.After blast, area is inspected, and weak parts are supported. 5.Rock is brought to an underground crusher, which separates ore, then lifted up to surface. Underground Mining

 Pro’sCon’s Less damage to the surface land Less visual impact Most money output Dangerous Expensive to implement Need professionals Effect ground stability Pro’s and Con’s

 Issues Facing Canada’s Mining Industry

  Six of the ten biggest polluters in North America are smelters and refineries in Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba.  Cleaning up pollution is the mining company’s job, and it’s expensive. Acid Precipitation

  Companies need to clean up dig sites after they’re done.  Planting trees, fixing landscape. Abandoned mines

  Despite a boom in the industry, youth are rarely attracted to working in the mining field.  The mining industry needs young workers, but Canadian youth are more attracted to high-tech jobs than working in mines. Employment problems

  Other countries often have lower labour costs, and keep their production costs low.  In order to compete, Canadian companies need to find ways to save money  Often, they fire people and use machines to do the work. New mineral deposits discovered in other countries

  When a mine closes, the effect on jobs can be terrible.  Often, entire towns shut down, because the mine that supported the economy shut down. Mining towns depend on mines for existence

 Writing From someone Else’s Perspective  Choose one of the perspectives you have just written about. You must write from that persons perspective.  You may choose to write in one of the following forms:  Letter  Diary  Speech  Proposal  Make sure that you are using the information we have already learned in your response.
