12
Objectives: To bring an “on the ground” lens to reinforce the learnings from the webinar so far To provide a practical application of some DEI principles for your organization To provide some local, relevant examples of how organizations succeed and are challenged by DEI application and practice
13
What is the DEI Lens in Peel Region? We know that…Peel Region is one of the most diverse regions in Canada But, we have learned that this fact alone does not automatically create an inclusive or equitable region, DEI is an intentional and mindful approach DEI is NOT a program or initiative, it is a commitment to a foundational principle of equity and inclusivity
14
What is the DEI Lens in Peel Region? What is ultimately behind a DEI philosophy? The belief, the absolute belief that ALL people and ALL their differences are an asset to a better workplace/organization, a better community, a better life and a better world.
15
Our Social Service is about changing lives for the better right? But: Are all live/experiences treated and perceived to be equal? How do we ensure DEI is understood and practices consistently?
16
Building an asset-focused community means embracing, respecting and including those who live, work and play in the community “To solve our social problems in our communities, the solution must be to build strong communities not just stronger programs and services. We forget that people live in communities and that families, friends, neighbors and faith communities have always been the front lines of how communities solve problems.” Paul Schmitz, CEO Public Allies
17
The Practical Application of DEI Principles for your Organization Developing a “Learning Culture” Accept that DEI work is not an end-game “expertise” in DEI work is a tricky word – I prefer to call it “humble and sometimes futile attempts at understanding our world” We are all challenged It takes courage Embracing a “learning” attitude/culture
18
Local, Relevant Examples of How Organizations succeed and are challenged by DEI Application and Practice Diversity work can be scary-mainly because we fear making a mistake, doing it wrong, acting exclusively instead of inclusively Diversity work can also be downplayed to protect mainstream privilege – we need to continue naming this and challenging this (competing rights, historical assumptions and stereotypes) What does failure look like (who is watching, who is judging, who holds a lifetime grudge?) – we NEED to work together and support each other – when we in – fight, we all lose/counterproductive Jump in! Commit to LEARNING with an open mind and heart
