World History Pre-Test Please find your name at the top left corner of the provided answer sheet and sit at that desk. If you can’t find your name sit at the back of the room where there is no answer sheet. You need to sit alphabetically just for the first part of class today.

After your Pre-Test… Take out what you’ll be using to record class notes. Write down your definition of history & be ready to share

History… is messy…

How do historians organize and make sense of historical data?

Using Chronology History is grounded in chronology - events and trends are arranged into logical sequences to identify patterns of change and continuity Continuity – things that stay the same over time Change – things that evolve over time

Paragraph Activity You have been provided five paragraphs from an essay. Put them in order.

Patterns… More than just putting events in order… Means understanding why and how one event may or may not lead to subsequent events (consequences!)

Chronology can be limited… Damaged or missing records can complicate things…

For example… Unreliable mail service between the colonies and Europe…

Limitations Cont’d… Where do we begin to claim an event caused or affected a later situation? What do we include? What do we leave out? All of these are judgments a historian makes while researching a topic – judgments that may be subjective and imperfect
