Changing the Scale of an Axis Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 1Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Opening the format axis dialog box Excel scales axes that plot numeric values to accommodate the smallest and largest values. This may not be what we want to show. We can change the scale for any axis that plots numeric values. Excel scales axes that plot numeric values to accommodate the smallest and largest values. This may not be what we want to show. We can change the scale for any axis that plots numeric values. To open the Format Axis dialog box, double click on the axis that we want to re-scale. 3 The format axis dialog box In the Format Axis dialog box, click on the Scale tab to access the options to re-scale the axis. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 3Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Changing the range of values for the axis - 1 Even though the scale of the axis fits the values in our data well, we will increase the maximum value on the axis from 100 to 200 to demonstrate how we re-scale the axis. First, double click in the text box for Maximum value to select the existing text. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 4Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Changing the range of values for the axis - 2 Next, type the new Maximum value, 200. Click on the OK button to apply the change. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 5Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

The axis with the wider scale The scale of the horizontal axis now goes from 0 to 200 instead of from 0 to 100. The length of the bars decreases to fit the new scale. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 6Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Changing the major unit on the axis We can also change the increments on the horizontal axis with the Format Axis dialog box. To open the Format Axis dialog box, double click on the axis that we want to re-scale. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 7Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Changing the major unit for the axis - 1 We will change the major unit from 100 to 50. This will create tick marks and grid lines at 50, 100, 150, and 200 on the horizontal axis. First, double click in the text box for Major unit to select the existing text. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 9Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

Changing the major unit for the axis - 2 Next, type the new value for the Major unit, 50. Click on the OK button to apply the change. Changing the Scale of an Axis, Slide 10Copyright © 2004, Jim Schwab, University of Texas at Austin

The chart with smaller major units We changed the major unit from 100 to 50, creating tick marks and grid lines at 50, 100, 150, and 200 on the horizontal axis. This change had no effect on the bars in the chart, but does make it a little easier to accurately estimate the values in relationship to the grid line at 50.
