Goal: To explain the difference between chemical and mechanical digestion while eating a cracker and describe where each takes place. Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Digestion in the Mouth  Mechanical: done automatically or as if by a machine instead of a controlled action. 1. What is mechanical digestion?  Chemical: composed of or involving the use of substances to aid the process of chemistry. 2. What is chemical digestion? 3. Where do each of these take place?

Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Digestion in the Mouth Put the cracker in your mouth. When you are ready to swallow put your finger on your Adam’s apple. In your journal: Describe exactly what happened while you were chewing and swallowing the cracker. What happened to your Adam’s apple as you swallowed? Is this chemical or mechanical digestion? Or both? Why or why not? What is the saliva doing?

Goal: To explain the difference between chemical and mechanical digestion while eating a cracker and describe where each takes place. Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Digestive in the Mouth Where do each of these take place? Make a T-Chart: Mechanical | Chemical Teeth Tongue Stomach Peristalsis throughout the system Saliva Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine

Goal: To learn the role of enzymes in chemical digestion by performing tests on sugars and starches in order to explain digestion in the mouth. Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Enzymes Write these definitions then answer the ?: Enzyme: a protein produced by living cells that promotes and acts as a catalyst Amylase: an enzyme found in the saliva. What is the purpose of Amylase?

Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Enzymes Copy this Data Table in your Journal: Digestion in the Mouth — Enzymes Starch SolutionAmylase & Distilled Water Amylase & Starch Solution Sugar Test- (Test Tube) Starch Test- (Plastic Cup)

Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Enzymes Write a hypothesis for each item in your data table: (I think… positive/negative… because…) Sugar test: Starch Solution Amylase & Distilled Water Amylase & Starch Solution Starch Test: Starch Solution Amylase & Distilled Water Amylase & Starch Solution

Sci7: Th Feb 11 In Journal Digestive in the Mouth READ The Following: “Galen – The Gladiator’s Doctor” (p.3) “Nutrients: You Just Can’t Live Without ‘Em” (p.20-3) ANSWER these questions: 1. What did Galen find out from seeing wounded gladiators? 2. What are the types energy the body needs? 3. Name the different titles of the “Nutrition” reading, and list one fact from each section.!

Goal: To learn the role of enzymes in chemical digestion by performing tests on sugars and starches in order to explain digestion in the mouth. Sci7: F Feb 12 In Journal Enzymes Write these definitions then answer the ?: Enzyme: a protein produced by living cells that promotes and acts as a catalyst Amylase: an enzyme found in the saliva. What is the purpose of Amylase?

Sci7: F Feb 12 In Journal Enzymes START THIS LAB WITH THE PLASTIC TRAY: 1.Use a pipette to Add 30 drops of starch solution to cups 1, 2, 5, and 6. 2.Add 30 drops of distilled water to cups 3 and 4. 3.Add 2 drops of amylase to cups 3, 4, 5, and 6. 4.Stir the contents of cups 3, 4, 5, and 6 with SEPARATE toothpicks. Let stand for 5 minutes. SUGAR TEST (Cups 1, 3, and 5): See Display STARCH TEST (Cups 2, 4, and 6): See Display ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON YOUR DISPLAY WHILE YOU ARE WAITING AND AFTER THE LAB:

Sci7: F Feb 12 In Journal Enzymes ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS WHILE YOU ARE WAITING AND AFTER THE LAB: 1.What do you think amylase is? 2.what do you think amylase will do when you mix with the starch solution? 3.why do you need to wait 5 minutes before you perform the tests on the starch solution and amylase mixture? 4.Do you think that anything other than eating might cause saliva? 5.How LONG does it take for the food to reach the stomach? 6.So why wait 5 minutes?

Sci7: M Feb 22 In Journal Sugar & Starches 1. Look at your results from the Enzyme Lab. 2. What is the purpose of the Amylase? 3. What evidence do you have that the amylase is an enzyme that aids digestion? Goal: To learn about carbohydrates and the forms in which they are found (sugar and starch) by performing chemical tests in order to explain why the human body needs carbohydrates.
