TWBI: What is it? TWBI = Two Way Bilingual Immersion Combines : Bilingual education model Foreign language immersion model Delivers HPS core curriculum Public school standards – no tuition

TWBI: What is it? Instruction through two languages ▫ Spanish ▫ English ▫ no translation/mixing Spanish is used for a significant portion of the instructional day ▫ K & 1 st = 90% in Spanish; 10% in English ▫ 2 nd = 80% in Spanish; 20% in English ▫ Moving toward 50%/50% by 5 th grade

TWBI : What does it look like? Approximately equal numbers of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers Students are interacting in the same environment for all of the school day. All students have the opportunity to model their native language as well as learn the second language.

Academic success in native language ▫ 3 rd grade – students score near their peers on standardized tests ▫ 5 th grade – students score at or above average compared to their peers on standardized tests Academic success in second language College and career benefits Appreciation of other cultures and an increase in self-esteem
