Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 6 Upgrade principle  Use of standard AB/RF transmitter and receiver modules  Operation, maintenance & on-call support of the backbone ensured by the AB-RF operation and piquet teams to the reception level in the experiments  Interface between AB/RF and TTC systems to be redesigned to replace the TTCmi crates, adding the missing functionalities (remote monitoring and control for clock switching and phase adjustment)  Financial effort made by PH/ESS and the experiments for the infrastructure, support manpower provided by AB

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 7 Upgrade principle  Agreement between AB/RF, AB/CO, AB/BDI, TS/EL, PH/ESS, and ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb  A document specifying the principle of the upgrade was signed by all the parties oApproval procedure ended last week, oStill in ‘restricted access’ oComments to be integrated to the document, which will then be released https://edms.cern.ch/document/628545/2

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 8  TTC system status reminder  Upgrade principle  [Some] details about the infrastructure  Practical implementation Outline

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 9 AB/RF backbone  Standard equipment for AB/RF  6U VME modules with 2 optical units (tx or rx)  SR4 oTransmitters for CMS and CCC (3 Bunch Clocks and 2 orbits)  CCC oReceivers for BST, TTCrd12 (test beam, backup solution), TTC transmitters oTransmitters + splitters for ALICE, ATLAS, LHCb, TTClab  Points 5, 2, 1, 8, TTClab o5 Receivers integrated in 3 VME modules oSpares TX RX-TX-SPLIT RX

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 10 Signal delivery at the experiments  Bunch Clock & Orbit oAB/RF receivers oBC ring1 and 2, BC reference. Sinusoidal signal, ~100mVpkpk for ALICE, ATLAS, LHCb, TTClab 600mVpkpk for CMS oOrbit ring1 and 2, 5ns pulse  Machine States oBST system oUsed to recognise guarantied periods of RF timing signals (between injection and end of physics) oRefreshed every ms oTransmitted to experiments from the CCC-BST master via optical fibres (1 per ring) and TTC protocol

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 11 Interface to the TTC: the RF2TTC module Preliminary Bunch Clock management (signal conversion, selection, phase adjustment, cleaning, status monitoring Orbit management (signal conversion, selection, signal length and delay adjustment, status monitoring Control & Monitoring RF TIMING SIGNALS BST VME BC AND ORBIT TO CENTRAL TRIGGER UNIT & TTC

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 12 TTC equipment at the experiments  Receiver crate o6U VME crate: Replacing 3 TTCmi (3x 3U) Paid by PH/ESS oVME Crate controller Proposed by PH/ESS: VP110 from CCT But CMS and LHCb would like to use CAEN modules oAB/RF receiver VME modules Supported and maintained by the RF piquet Between 2 and 4 VME modules per experiments oRF2TTC VME module Receives timing signals from the AB/RF modules and machine states from the BST optical link Presently being specified and designed oBC and Orbit fanout Presently being specified and designed

Sophie BARON, PH-ESSLEADE - 07 Nov 2005 14 Transition between RD12 and New system  RD12 Transmitters oA small design study will be made to adapt them to the shape of the timing signals oThey will be re-installed in the CCC as soon as the place is available [place reserved next to AB/CO crates]  Receivers oRD12 receiver crates [TTCmi] and the new RF2TTC prototypes will be concurrently installed in the test beam areas for tests and validation oIf this is not enough, the TTCmi can also be also installed in the pit as a backup system during LHC launch  RD12 System Recycling: oRD12 system could afterwards be recycled to provide the TTC timing signals to the test beams areas, in case test beam is needed during runs
