Electronic Systems Support CAN Branch PSU Designed: Bjorn Halgren PH-ESS Responsible:Paul Harwood

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 2 What is it? A 6U crate, containing Power supply modules (up to 8) CAN patch modules (up to 4) Control & monitoring (ELMB) Capacity Maximum of 16 isolated branches Each branch powering up to 32 CAN devices (depending on load)

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 3 What does it do for you? Provides the required CAN supply voltages Provides a convenient method of ‘patching’ the CAN bus into the cabling to the remote devices Connects directly to a Kvaser interface Provides; via a CAN interface (DCS) Monitoring (current, voltage) of each CAN bus branch. ON/OFF control of each branch.

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 4 Crate Details 6U x 160mm Contains ELMB for monitoring & control

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 5 Power Supply Module 2 CAN branches Each branch electrically isolated 12V, 2A CAN bus supply 12V, 3A Digital + Analogue supply

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 6 Patch Module 4 CAN branches Fitted to rear of crate, patches power & CAN bus together Takes 4 CAN inputs, or 1 25way connector from Kvaser interface

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 7 Current Status Current activities Electrical, Thermal & Operational testing about to commence Building of 5 pre-production units to satisfy immediate requirements 5 crates, 20 PSU modules, 10 patch modules This gives 5 half populated crates (8 branches), or an alternate combination

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 8 What will it cost? Costs are currently only estimates Final unit costs will depend on production quantities and the final production contractor Estimates shown below should be close, but could vary in either direction

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 9 Current Actions Fix quantities required ALICE: ? ATLAS: 40-50 CMS: ? LHCb: 3-6 Search for a suitable contractor to build and supply the production units (price enquiry) Complete the testing, including EMC, environmental etc. Review production aspects of the design, to improve cost, safety, reliability etc.

16 June 2004 CAN Branch PSU 10 Future Support PH-ESS will Procure Against advance payments As for VME crates, TTC equipment, VMEbus SBCs Test Provide second-line support Repair First-line support (spares) with experiments
