2 Global Environmental Measurements ESA’s Envisat satellite to be launched in Nov 2001 will even include measurements to lower altitudes in the atmosphere for climate and air polution studies. Using global data sets to study the physics and chemistry of the earth’s atmosphere. The Swedish Odin satellite monitoring ozone and other trace gases of importance for middle atmosphere chemisty using both high frequency (500 GHz) and optical technology. The GEM group works with conversion of the measurements to geophysical quantities and intrepretation of the results. Ozone hole 1970 –1993

4 Radar Remote Sensing For denser forests frequencies lower than C- band have to be used. CARBAS makes use of low frequencies (20-90 MHz), that penetrate the crowns of the trees and allow direct measurement of trunks and large branches. Area: 1 km 2 The goal of the Remote Sensing Group is to develop new remote sensing techniques in the radio and microwave frequency interval, aimed primarily at environmental applications. Forest biomass estimation using C- band (5 GHz) interferometric synthetic aperture radar onboard the European ERS-1/2 satellites is one application with particular relevance for the Kyoto protocol.  ESA The green colour on this ERS-1/2 scene over a 100 km swath is related to biomass Another application of interest has been the sensitivity of the Arctic area for climatological change.

5 Space Geodesy Crustal motion measurementsGPS site VänersborgVLBI and GPS at Onsala VLBI measures earth rotation parameters and the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). GPS is used in geodesy, navigation, and remote sensing of the atmosphere. Geophysical applications include studies of crustal motions and the atmospheric water vapour content - of importance in climate research and weather forecasting
