2 26 August 2013 John McIntyre Conference Centre, Pollock Halls, 18 Holyrood Park Road, Edinburgh Piecing the puzzle together Using data to improve quality and efficiency Event Programme Improving Patient Safety and Flow: what does this mean for productivity? (Dr Kate Silvester, Kate Silvester Ltd) Dr Kate Silvester will link the improvements in patient flow through the health and social care system to the productivity and efficiency agenda and will discuss what this means in terms of shifting from the ‘economies of scale’ financial model ‘ to the economies of flow’ accounting model. The Health Foundation website provides further information on Improving Patient Flow http://www.health.org.uk/publications/improving-patient-flow/ Introduction to Wisdom (Roger Black, Information Services Division) Wisdom is an information tool which supports comparative analysis and benchmarking by providing a single point of entry to a range of national indicators for health and social care. This session will provide you with a brief introduction to Wisdom. Data System Showcase (Linda Semple, Scottish Government) There are several national data systems available to NHS Boards that can help you to identify areas for quality improvement or potential productive opportunities. You will get a chance to view a number of these systems and to hear from the people who manage these systems about how the information can support you to improve quality and efficiency. What do we talk about when we talk about data? (Neil Pettinger, Kurtosis) Good decision-making should be informed by good data. But we've always had a problem in the NHS matching data to decisions. We often use the wrong data. Or we use the right data but in the wrong way. Or we just don’t use data at all. Neil Pettinger will explore the reasons why we frequently fail to use data intelligently, and propose ways of addressing those failures. Using Data to Improve Quality and Efficiency: Theory into Practice Neil Pettinger, Kurtosis / Linda Semple, Scottish Government) You will have the opportunity to take part in an exciting interactive exercise. The exercise will allow you to experience a common problem outwith your local context and will build upon the theory and learning gained in the earlier part of the day.
