General Rules Write in words numbers one through ten. Numbers above ten are written in figures unless the number begins a sentence.

Numbers one through ten Numbers above ten Number beginning a sentence

General Rules Round-number approximations above ten that can be expressed in one or two words may be written in word form—or they may be written in figures.

Related Numbers Numbers that are used to express the same kind of information are written in the same form. Therefore, write numbers one through ten in figures when they are used with related numbers above ten.

Unrelated Numbers Unrelated numbers used in the same sentence are considered individually to determine whether they should be expressed in words or figures.

With Words and Abbreviations Place in figures numbers that are used directly with nouns or abbreviations.

Money Place in figures amounts of money. Omit the decimal and zeros in expressing whole dollar amounts. Amounts under $1 are shown with the word cents unless they are used in conjunction with amount of $1 or more.

Whole dollar amounts Amount less that $1 Amount less that $1 with related amount of $1 or more

Percentages Write percentages in figures followed by the word percent.

Dates Use cardinal figures (1, 2, 3, etc.) when dates are written after the month; use ordinal figures (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, etc.) when dates are written before the month.

Periods of Time General periods of time are treated the same as any other general number. Use figures, however, for time periods related to business arrangements; for example, payment terms, loan lengths, and sale conditions.

General period of time Business arrangement

Weights and Measures Express in figures the amount something weighs or measures (inches, feet, ounces, pounds, quarts, gallons, each, reams, degrees, liters, grams, etc.)
