2   Tier two consists of high frequency words that occur across a variety of domains.  That is, these words occur often in mature language situations such as adult conversations and literature, and therefore strongly influence speaking and reading. What is Tier II Vocabulary?

3   Important for reading comprehension  Characteristic of mature language users  Contain multiple meanings  Used across a variety of environments (generalizations)  Increased descriptive vocabulary (words that allow students to describe concepts in a detailed manner) Following is a list of standards for tier two words:

4 brisk energetic; quick He walked briskly down the street. (lines 31-32)

5 congenial pleasant or agreeable On the other hand, a pub would be more congenial than a boarding house. There would be…lots of people to talk to,… (lines 80-83)

6 conjured called an image to mind

7 rapacious aggressively greedy The name itself conjured up images of watery cabbage, rapacious landladies, and a powerful smell of kippers. (lines 88-91)
