Halloween Origins and Traditions
3
Origins öHalloween began 2000 years ago in Ireland, England, and Northern France.
4
They celebrated their New Year on November 1 st. öThis day marked the beginning of the dark, cold winter.
5
Samhain (sow-in) öOn the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
6
Costumes öPeople thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes…
7
So they wore costumes. öThis way, the ghosts couldn’t recognize them!
8
The Christian Influence ö Christians began to celebrate All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints. öAll Hallows' Eve or Halloween is the night before. ('hallow' means 'saint').
9
All Souls Day November 2 nd, called All Souls Day, is the day set apart in the Roman Catholic Church to remember the dead.
10
Trick-or-treating began with the poor in the 15 th century… öDuring the All Souls Day in England, poor people would ask for “soul cakes.” öFamilies would give soul cakes to the poor people if they promised to pray for their families.
11
then children… öChildren did this too. They would visit their neighborhoods and be given food and money.
12
Today: öChildren still go from house-to-house, but instead of food and money, they get candy.
13
Adults dress up too! Sometimes their costumes are scary!
14
Sometimes their costumes are silly!
15
Sometimes we dress up like celebrities Famous singers Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash
16
What is a Jack-O-Lantern? öThe Irish used to carry turnips with candles in them to light their way at night and to scare away ghosts..
17
When they came to America they found many pumpkins. They were easier to carve than turnips.
18
Now, Jack-O-Lanterns are used for decorating people’s homes.
