Sustainable development: is a pattern of resource use that aim to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future. Pillars of World Sustainable Development Social development: also known as social change, refers to: change in social structure: the nature, the social institutions, the social behaviour or the social relations of a society, community of people, and so on; any event or action that affects a group of individuals that have shared values or characteristics.

12. www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 12 Latin American Grid Infrastructure (LAGI) Operations model – very preliminary (1/2) The model is based on the existence of Autonomous Grid Infrastructures (AGRIDs) and it defines the entities responsible to provide their seamless interoperation to form a large continental grid infrastructure; The model differs from the EGI one, where NGIs are the major building blocks. Currently, there is not enough critical mass in several Latin American countries (especially those not belonging to EELA-2) to create complex NGIs with definite cash flows, but institutions in these countries would see large benefits from participating in a powerful continental infrastructure; This approach can catalyse the creation of National or Regional Grid Initiatives by fostering the collaboration amongst international scientific communities.

14. www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 14 Some evindences Evidence 1: long-term sustainable e-Infrastructures can have different models which depend on the conditions of the parts of world where they are being created. Evidence 2: both EGI and LAGI models need to find consensus by the “decision makers” of their relative countries. Evidence 3: this could be done not only in the context of the Design Studies but also in the frameworks of the dissemination activities of all the projects that will finish before EGI and LAGI will take over. Evidence 4: until now several e-Infrastructure projects have established “peer to peer” and this has revealed as a long process.

15. www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 15 Proposal for a generic MoU Can we (EELA-2, EGEE-III, EGI and all the other projects interested) then agree on a generic MoU to: –Organize and attend common “decision makers events” –Exchange documents related to sustainability models –Cross-link web pages related to sustainability models and related documents having the digital library of BELIEF-II as central repository –Widen the membership of middleware consortia outside Europe –Exchange best practices on e-Infrastructure management, operation and monitoring –Definine common policies for training and applications support
