www.eu-eela.eu E-science grid facility for Europe and Latin America Sustainability models (for e-Infrastructures) Roberto Barbera (EELA-2 Technical Coordinator) University of Catania and INFN (Italy) Concertation Workshop on Policies and Sustainability at EGEE’08 Istanbul, 23.09.2008

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 2 Outline Concepts and analogies (“the same equations have the same solutions”) Sustainability of e-Infrastructures The EGI model The EELA-2 project and the Latin American Grid Infrastructure (LAGI) Proposal for a generic MoU

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 3 Some concepts… (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability#Definition) Sustainability: in a general sense, is the capacity to maintain a certain process or state indefinitely; the term has its roots in ecology as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future. Sustainable development: is a pattern of resource use that aim to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future. Three pillars: sustainable development must involve social and economic development, and environmental protection

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 4 …some more concepts… (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_development) Environmental protection: is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible. Economic development: is made of three building blocks, i.e. information, integration, and participation. Pillars of World Sustainable Development Social development: also known as social change, refers to: change in social structure: the nature, the social institutions, the social behaviour or the social relations of a society, community of people, and so on; any event or action that affects a group of individuals that have shared values or characteristics.

VOs NGIs M/W, Supp., Training Sustain. e-Infra. E-Infrastructures’ Sustainable Development

Kranzlmüller presemtation at EGEE’08 The system becomes sustainable only if a social change occurs. By analogy, this means a change in the way we consider and support VOs

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 7 The EGI Business Model Ref.: EGI Blueprint and D3.1

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 8 Does one size fit all ? The EGI model is in line with the principles of sustaina- ble development of complex ecosystems; One question remains, however: in a world dominated by an uneven access to ICT, can it straightforwardly be applied to all e-Infrastructures ? Ref.: maps.maplecroft.com

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 9 The EELA-2 project (www.eu-eela.eu) 14 Countries 16 Partners (9 JRUs) 53 Members France Ireland Italy Portugal Spain Argentina Brazil Chile Colombia CLARA (International) Cuba Ecuador Mexico Peru Venezuela

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 10 EELA vs. EELA-2 EELA (SSA project under FP6) Build a bridge between consolidated e-Infrastructure initiatives in Europe and emerging ones in Latin American Create a collaboration network to deploy a large portfolio of scientific applications on a well supported Pilot Test-bed Care in parallel of the training in grid technologies and of the knowledge dissemination and outreach EELA-2 (I 3 project under FP7) Provide an empowered Grid Facility with versatile services fulfilling application requirements Ensure production quality services Ensure the long term sustainability of the e- Infrastructure beyond the term of the project Expand the current EELA e- Infrastructure Look for new communities outside academia (Industry and Business)

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 11 One task and five deliverables TNA1.2: Long-term Sustainability – Policy, International Cooperation DNA2.2: “Long-term dissemination and training cost estimate” (M6, September, 30, 2008) DNA3.3: “Long-term user support cost estimate” (M6, September, 30, 2008) DSA1.3: “Long-term Infrastructure cost estimate” (M6, September, 30, 2008) DSA2.2: “Long-term network support cost estimate” (M6, September, 30, 2008) DNA1.11: “White paper for the long-term sustainability of e- Infrastructures” (M22, January, 31, 2010) Outcomes will be presented at (al least) six “Decision Makers’ Days” (the first one will be in Mexico in two weeks)

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 12 Latin American Grid Infrastructure (LAGI) Operations model – very preliminary (1/2) The model is based on the existence of Autonomous Grid Infrastructures (AGRIDs) and it defines the entities responsible to provide their seamless interoperation to form a large continental grid infrastructure; The model differs from the EGI one, where NGIs are the major building blocks. Currently, there is not enough critical mass in several Latin American countries (especially those not belonging to EELA-2) to create complex NGIs with definite cash flows, but institutions in these countries would see large benefits from participating in a powerful continental infrastructure; This approach can catalyse the creation of National or Regional Grid Initiatives by fostering the collaboration amongst international scientific communities.

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 14 Some evindences Evidence 1: long-term sustainable e-Infrastructures can have different models which depend on the conditions of the parts of world where they are being created. Evidence 2: both EGI and LAGI models need to find consensus by the “decision makers” of their relative countries. Evidence 3: this could be done not only in the context of the Design Studies but also in the frameworks of the dissemination activities of all the projects that will finish before EGI and LAGI will take over. Evidence 4: until now several e-Infrastructure projects have established “peer to peer” and this has revealed as a long process.

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 15 Proposal for a generic MoU Can we (EELA-2, EGEE-III, EGI and all the other projects interested) then agree on a generic MoU to: –Organize and attend common “decision makers events” –Exchange documents related to sustainability models –Cross-link web pages related to sustainability models and related documents having the digital library of BELIEF-II as central repository –Widen the membership of middleware consortia outside Europe –Exchange best practices on e-Infrastructure management, operation and monitoring –Definine common policies for training and applications support

www.eu-eela.eu Istanbul, EGEE’08, 23.09.2008 16 Another good example (Generic MoU on Grid Interoperability) Have agreed so far: EELA-2 EDGeS Project EUAsiaGrid Project EU-India Grid Project SEEGRID-SCI Project UTIC Laboratory (Tunisia)
