2 How Sonnets Work  Definition: A sonnet is a 14 line long lyric poem that has three coordinate quatrains and a concluding couplet  The rhyme scheme of a sonnet is ABAB/ CDCD /EFEF /GG  Should have 10 beats per line  10 syllables per line

3 More About Sonnets  Two types of sonnets Elizabithian and Shakespeorean  The first quatrain should establish the subject of the sonnet  This is how they should be read: soft- LOUD- soft- LOUD- soft- LOUD- soft- LOUD-soft-LOUD  Sonnet comes from the Italian word “sonneto” which means “little song”

4 Even More Sonnets  Most sonnets have a volta  A volta is a turning point  Usually begins on the ninth line of the sonnet

5 History of Sonnets  Developed in the fourteenth century  Shakespeare’s 154 sonnet was published in 1609  Have been around for over 400 years

6 Modern Sonnets  Is not as strict as traditional sonnets  “Loosens” some of the requirement
