2. Who is Johnny Appleseed? Johnny Appleseed was born on September 26, 1774. His name was John Chapman. He was an American pioneer nurseryman and he introduced apple trees to many places. He was very kind and generous and became an American legend. He was a missionary.

3. He began his journey in 1792 when he was 18 years old with his 11 year old half brother. He became known as Johnny Appleseed in 1806 when he arrived in Jackson County, Ohio with a load of seeds. Johnny Appleseed died in his sleep from the winter plague on March 18, 1845.

5. How do apples grow? First the mature apple tree grows tiny flower buds and tiny leaf buds - these are like bumps on the twigs. In spring the tree is covered with blossoms when the flower buds open. Then the leaf buds open and develop. Bees and other insects collect nectar from the flowers and transfer pollen from one flower to another - this fertilizes the flower. The pollen is the male cell from the flower and it grows tubes down into the female ovaries a the base of the flower petals. When the petals fall off the flower the tiny ovaries begin to swell and grow into an apple. The apples grow bigger and bigger until in late summer they’re ready to eat.
