2 Phonics A syllable has only one vowel sound. Let’s divide each of the following words into syllables. robin rob/in petal pet/al broken bro/ken taken ta/ken wagon wag/on

3 Phonics music mu/sic final fi/nal total to/tal hotel ho/tel pupil pu/pil In a word where the first vowel has a long sound, the word can be divided after the vowel. In a word where the first vowel has a short sound, the word can be divided after the consonant.

6 Vocabulary Open your Reading book to page 406. Read the selection titled “The Everglades”.

7 suppose When you suppose something, you think it is true. Has there ever been a time when you supposed something might happen, and it did? What do you suppose you would see in the Florida Everglades?

8 roost Birds roost, or perch, when they sleep in trees at night. Why might a bird roost in a tree? Why might birds roost in treetops?

9 spears If someone spears something, he or she sticks something sharp through it. What kinds of things might a woodpecker spear? How would a great blue heron use its beak to spear fish?

10 strikes If something strikes something else, it hits it. Have you ever had hail or sleet strike you? How can it be helpful for lightning to strike a forest?

11 glimpse When you get a glimpse of something, you only get a quick peek at it. If you caught a glimpse of something at the beach, what might it have been? Where would you catch a glimpse of a nesting bird?

12 maze A maze is a winding set of paths that is like a puzzle What is it like to walk in a maze? In what ways can a maze of roots be helpful to fish?

13 Grammar: Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement One small place in a tree. How does it get there? What is the pronoun? it What is the antecedent of it? place Place is singular, so the pronoun has to be singular. The bugs climb in, and they make a home. What is the pronoun? they What is the antecedent of they? bugs Bugs is plural, so the pronoun has to be plural.

15 “One Small Place in a Tree” Expository nonfiction explains information or ideas. Nonfiction selections contain real facts about a topic. Nonfiction often includes photographs or realistic illustrations of the subject. In addition, nonfiction may include maps, charts, or diagrams. Pictures often give more information about a topic or show the facts in a different way.

16 “One Small Place in a Tree” Turn in your Reading book to page 408. We are going to read a story about a tree and the ways forest animals depend on it. Think about a time you either visited or read about a forest. Comprehension Strategies Ask questions if you are confused about what you are reading. Asking questions and looking for answers help good readers understand what they read. You may have more than one question at a time and good readers continually think of more questions.
