10 Enzyme Vocab* Substrate = the substance on which an enzyme acts Products = the end results of a reaction Active site = a region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction

11 Lock-and-key Model Enzymes follow a lock-and-key model, where the enzyme binds only to a specific substrate* When the substrate attaches, the enzyme changes shape to create an even tighter fit, known as a “conformational change”

13 Naming Enzymes Science “trick”! When you see a word that ends in “ase”- it is probably an enzyme!** Enzymes are named for the reaction they catalyze (catalyze* = “to cause or accelerate a reaction”) “ose” = sugar “ase” = enzyme!!!

14 Naming Enzymes Often times you can tell which reaction the enzymes catalyze… Sucrase = enzyme that breaks down sucrose Proteases = enzymes that break down proteins Lipases = enzymes that break down lipids ** “ase” = enzyme**
