1 Comprehension Using Context Clues Goal for Lesson 8: You will use the context of the passage to uncover the meaning of words that you do not know. You will use context clues as a strategy to support Comprehension.

2 Context Clues: What are they? Finding the meaning of words within a sentence or in a paragraph. 1.If you read around the word that is giving you problems, you can use another word to substitute that word so that the sentence still makes sense. Comprehension

3 Context Clues: What are they? Finding the meaning of words within a sentence or in a paragraph. Comprehension 2.If it still does not make sense, use more sentences and maybe the whole paragraph to see if you can find a replacement word to make it work. It works if the new word makes sense.

4 Context Clues: A strategy to learn the meaning of unknown words when Reading. Some possible words that could give you problems: homage, pilgrimage, scholar, inquiry Let’s practice this passage together: Matthew 2:1-12 The Message Comprehension

5 Do you need to know each of the words listed in order to comprehend the passage? Learning to identify the words that are necessary for comprehension is very important when you are reading. Comprehension

6 Sometimes you can figure out the meaning of the passage without understanding some of the words.These are the words that are NOT essential to understanding the passage. Comprehension

7 Did we need to know the meanings of the words highlighted to understand the passage? Scholars Homage Pilgrimage Inquiry Comprehension Context Clues Matthew 2,Matthew 2, The Message

8 Context Clues: A strategy to learn the meaning of unknown words when reading. Homage: to give a special honor Pilgrimage: search or journey to find Inquiry: questioning or searching for Comprehension Scholars: person who are experts on a subject or topic they have studied.

9 Context Clues: A strategy to learn the meaning of unknown words when Reading. Were all these highlighted words important to understanding the meaning of the passage? Comprehension I would say, “no”, they are not all important to understanding the passage. Let me explain….

10 Could you still understand the passage if you did not know the word, inquiry? I would still know that Herod heard about a king being born and he was terrified. That is the main idea here. So it is not important to know the word inquiry here. Comprehension

11 Could you still understand the passage if you did not know the word, pilgrimage? When you read the sentence, “We are on a pilgrimage to worship him”, I don’t think you have much information for the word’s meaning. If you read the entire paragraph you know they traveled far from the east to find the new King. You can use context clues! Comprehension

12 Could you still understand the passage if you did not know the word, homage? Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? You can use context clues here, too. They want to worship him. Homage means to worship, to give honor. Comprehension

13 Could you still understand the passage if you did not know the word, scholars? “…a band of scholars arrived in Jerusalem from the East.” You can use context clues here, as well! If you Read further on in the next few verses you see they studied the skies and stars and were able to interpret them. They were knowledgeable! Comprehension

14 Putting it into Practice Using Context Clues Passage: Matthew 2:13-23, The Message Write a Journal Response: 1.What words did you have trouble with? 2. Can you identify the words you needed to know for your comprehension of the passage? Record them in your journal. Comprehension

15 Putting it into Practice Using Context Clues Passage: Matthew 2:13-23 3. Did you have to use the dictionary for any words you could not get using context clues? 4. How is this strategy helpful in improving your vocabulary while learning to read more complex texts? Comprehension
