A note about language in Douglass’ autobiography Douglass sometimes includes words we consider offensive. Derogatory words were part of the experience slaves endured, and Douglass wanted his readers to understand, as much as possible, how one group of people mistreated another. He wanted to expose readers to the reality of his experience.

RAPT Writing Practice Whenever you speak or write, assume your audience doesn’t have a clue what you are talking/writing about. R If you don’t restate the question somewhere in your response, your audience will spend most of their time trying to figure out what you’re talking/writing about. A If you don’t answer in detail, they will only get a superficial (fluffy) idea of what you’re thinking. P If you don’t use an example or evidence, they will think you don’t really have any proof to back up your idea. T If you don’t thoroughly explain your proof, they will wonder whether it really proves what you’re saying or whether you just threw something out there hoping it will help prove your point.

Example 1 - Advanced RAPT Response Douglass’ move to Baltimore “laid the foundation for everything that followed” because he learned and experienced things he probably wouldn’t have experienced had he stayed at Captain Anthony’s farm. For example, he learned how to read and write and why slaves shouldn’t become educated. It showed different perspectives on life. This is all positive because, for all he knows, he could have ended up dying from severe conditions, but instead he was chosen to leave and experience a different slave life.

Example 2 - Advanced RAPT Response Education in the hands of a slave was dangerous because of the simple fact that they have been deprived of it. Once they obtained it, there would be no stopping them, making them “unmanageable.” Therefore, white men feared that one day they would become inferior, so they kept slaves ignorant due to slaves “getting an inch [and taking]…a mile.”

Example 3 - Advanced RAPT Response Slaves would “be of no value” to their masters if they learned to read and write because they would become smarter than the masters and learn how to fight back with knowledge. Slaves “will become discontent” with their lives, Frederick overheard Mr. Auld say. Slaves were told to believe that they were meant only for work, not to learn and fight for their freedom.
