Passive Learning Where the learner receives no feedback from the instructor (person or program) on his or her efforts.

Learners are actively engaged in the learning process. This can be achieved by reading, writing, and playing games that reinforce the learning. Active Learning Wii Fit Wii Sports

How Did This All Start? Kids love to play gaming systems.

Kids don’t always like to read.

Wii Gaming System + Reading = Motivation for Accelerated Reading for all grades!

How Does This Work? Student reads Accelerated Reader Books and take tests. For every certification that a student achieves, the student gets a ticket to play the wii for 10 minutes.

It does take effort on my part to make this successful. I feel that this is a worthwhile venture for the students. If this motivates them to read then, I am in!!! Specific time is set aside for the students to come play the Wii throughout the school day

Where is the Proof? Tappahannock Elementary School Tappahannock, VA 22560 Implemented the Wii with their AR reading program in 2006 with 3 rd and 4 th Graders. Expanded the program to K – 2 in the next 4 years. The first year, the 3 rd Graders achieved 462 points in one school year. In the 4 th year of implementation, the 3 rd Graders earned 2,568 points!

Alamo Elementary Fort Stockton, Tx. Implemented the Wii with the AR program in 2008-09 with all grades. The number shown for 2010-11 school year is only through January of 2011.

Promotion and Motivation I created a Wii Wall. Every student had a certificate with their tickets attached to it. This became a challenge to each student to get more tickets than their friends. I also posted their pictures of them playing the Wii in my classroom.

Example of a Second Grader’s Certificate. It was fierce competition within the 2 nd grade!

What is the cost? Wii Gaming Console - $150.00 Extra Remotes - $25 - $35 a piece Games – $50 – $70 a piece. (based on Amazon shopping site.)

How in the world do I pay for this??  P.T.O./P.T.A. organizations  School District  Fundraiser gift cards (ex. Pennies for Patients)

 Grants (local and other grants possibilities) http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/grant.html http://www.cpsb.org/Scripts/abshire/grants.asp - multiple funding possibilities http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/os/technology/edgrants.html – U.S. Department of Education web page link to grants Most of the games, the Wii and remotes were paid out of personal expenses for Alamo. It was that important to me to keep the students involved in reading.
